I am the Head Pixie and Pixel Pusher at Pixielated Pixels, a creator of contemporary photographic art. Welcome to my eclectic print shop.

I am British born and bred but New York City based and I first picked up a camera around 50 years ago. Shooting film and darkroom printing never thrilled me as much as powerful computers and the wonderful software I use today. I began working with computers in the mid 1980s. Over the years I have become confident and competent with the digital artist's tools available and feel that the world has finally caught up with my creative inner vision. Intensely powerful color and a somewhat surreal take on the real world is the way my mind sees things and I enjoy producing digital images to match.

"Reality is a somewhat overrated thing" has become my mantra and I hope you enjoy where it leads me. If not I'll just blame it on the pixies! There are many galleries here of different subjects dear to my heart. I believe that within these galleries there is an artwork to be found for almost every taste.

Shutterbug reader Chris Lord is another transplant, this time from the UK, and calls the Big Apple his home. In this site Lord has created a fairy-tale land of HDR photography and collected arresting images in six galleries. Heck, even his portrait in Meet the Artist is HDR, and one of the best portraits of a photographer I've seen in a long, long while. (we make terrible subjects for other shooters.) The first two galleries include images from both his original and adopted home, but I started with the United Kingdom, which has three sub collections, including The Brighton Experience. Lord's approach to HDR mixes well with his nostalgic approach to image making and the subject matter at hand. His lush and whimsical image of the Brighton Royal Pavilion summons up impressions of Douglas Fairbanks in 1924's The Thief of Bagdad. While his precisely composed image of people on the beach with a pier in the background recalls postcards of the 1940s but is still very much of today. The same time-travel whimsey is on hand with Exploring Manhattan, part of the six collection Glimpses Of Gotham. His beautifully crafted Vintage Flatiron recalls both Edward Steichen's The Flatiron and Spider-Man, no mean accomplishment for a single photograph. If I'm sounding a bit rhapsodic it's because Chris Lord's images are spectacular in execution with a real feeling that the photographer is having lots of fun creating them. GREETING CARDS: Our 5" x 7" greeting cards are produced on digital offset printers using 110 lb. paper stock. Each card is coated with a UV protectant on the outside surface which produces a semi-gloss appearance. The inside of each card has a matte white finish and can be customized with a personal text message up to 500 characters in length. The message is centered on the inside of the card and printed in black 18pt Arial font. The artist's name and the name of the image are printed on the back of each card. Cards may be ordered in a horizontal or vertical configuration. Cards may be ordered with a white background or black background. A Bit More About Me

All my images are produced in Lightroom and Photoshop CC. Depending on the image I may also have used some combination of Nik's software, onOne's Perfect Suite and/or the Topaz plug-ins. I use these mostly in "manual" mode but sometimes use the built-in presets before tweaking them for the effect I'm after. Often a preset is a good place to start but must be tweaked and reduced in opacity and added to other presets also tweaked and reduced in level. Kind of like cooking a recipe, a little of this and a little of that! I use a powerful computer with dual ten-core Xeon processors that I built myself, to my own specifications. Two calibrated 34-inch monitors and a 27-inch Wacom Cintiq tablet/monitor. My mantra has always been "Reality is a somewhat overrated thing" as I prefer to create the image, to the best of my ability, that I see in my mind's eye!

I most often keep my camera in AV mode and frequently bracket exposures so that I have a choice of dark to light or the possibility of a "High Dynamic Range" image which I, these days, create and tone-map in Lightroom, thereby keeping the file in 32 bits.

I also frequently add layers of texture files and color overlays to my images. Sometimes up to three or four texture files at various opacity and blending modes. I keep folders of clouds, skies and other bits and pieces that I might add to images when I feel the need.

I probably should have been a painter but never had the time or space to learn how. But I have spent many years learning how to create photographic art with the tools available in software. I hated my darkroom full of smelly chemicals and timers but embraced the mix of computers and photography in 1986. I started using an Amiga computer back then and digitizing my slides through a black and white closed-circuit TV camera and a color wheel. After making three monotone files through the red, blue and green color gels I used software to combine them and re-create the color image on the computer. Although things were rather primitive compared to todays software I thought that the ability to do this was incredible and that the clunky pixelized images were pure magic. I have never looked back.
